How to Help Fight Food Waste
Food waste is becoming an increasingly significant global issue due to its economic, social and environmental implications.
The Food and Agricultural Organisation reported that approximately one-third of all produced foods for human consumption is lost and wasted every year across the entire supply chain. This is about 1.3 billion tons of edible food that is thrown away each year! If food wastage were a country, it would be the third largest emitting country in the world.
Food waste is responsible for green house gas emissions which is contributing to global warming. When we waste food, we also waste all the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, transport, and package it.
So, how can you fight food waste and take a bit of pressure off Mother Nature?
Meal Planning
Meal planning is one of the most effective ways to reduce food waste in your home and not to mention saving on your food bills. It may take a little bit of organisation, but it will make your trip to the shop easier, as well as your evenings, as you'll know exactly what you're cooking.
Get friendly with you freezer
If you are making a weekly meal plan, don’t plan on cooking every night. Cooking and freezing portions of meals will help save on waste and are a convenient solution for when you need something quick to reheat from the freezer.
Freeze fruits that you think may not get eaten before they go soft!
- Frozen berries are perfect for smoothies, or you can microwave them and drizzle them over a pancake stack, yum!
- Chop up your bananas and freeze them, also perfect for smoothies, or pop them in a blender and whizz up to make banana ice cream! Try adding a tbsp of peanut butter and another of honey for extra sweetness.
Don’t fret about your garden herbs and leafy greens going to waste! Chop them up and put them in ice cube trays with a small amount of water for stews and soups.
Vegetable and Fruit Peel Uses
Don't throw your kitchen scraps away; put them to work. The outer skins of fruit and vegetables are filled with flavour and vitamins, and most often have enough matter left in them for another go-round.

Have you tried making vegetable crisps with veg peelings? In this case they are best used fresh. Sprinkle the peelings with a little oil and a flavouring of your choice (try chilli flakes, parmesan or vinegar), spread them on a baking tray and bake at 180C for 20-25 mins.
- Vegetable peelings can easily be used to make soups, they have plenty of flavour. Puree the soup and tah-dah, zero waste.
- Save onion skins and ends, tomato cores, carrot tops, celery leaves etc to make your own vegetable broth. Simmer in water with a bay leaf and a few black peppercorns for 30 minutes and then cool before draining out the veg.
- Citrus peels such as lemon or orange peels are fab for a homemade vinegar cleaning solution, the citrus oils will help dissolve grease.
